One more for the road

I had AQo raised a very tight woman at this 10 20 game when she limped in EP. The button cold called behind me as did the bb.

(The button and I had it in for each other, we had been going to war all night at 5-10 and 10-20. I told myself that he was a "Showdown Monkey" He wasn't folding anything that had showdown value. At one poin he had c/r the turn with AK high and then check called my river bluff with the same Ace high, I had a weaker ace high of course).

Flop Qs Jd 4d. I had the Ad which helps me a bit.

She led into me and I raised (not enthusiastic about TPTK here, but this is a big pot). Showdown Monkey called 2 cold, bb folded, she called. I put her on KQ exactly.

Turn Kh. She again leads into me again. sigh I called, SM raised and we both called. I resigned myself to check/call mode because I really had no idea of his range, could be the nuts or total crap.

River 10c. She checked. I checked, ready to over-call. He bet, she called, I was about to call before I noticed that I had the nuts

Go Figure DMW!!!

I raised, he called, she folded.

Post Mortem.

Showdown Monkey had 10-9 off suit. So he turned the nuts and I rivered him.

The woman claimed that she had flopped a set of Js. No, I don't know that she wasn't lying but it would be a strange one to tell that would not benefite her a bit. She certainly did not keep secrets about what she folded, and was quite a chatterbox in her last hour.

I know that playing a JJJ this way may not make sense to us*, but I assure you that if you played with her it would be understandable. Many daytime regulars habitually fear the worst and will go into check/call mode when someone raises them. This is what I did with my top pair, even after it turned into the nuts!

Again, this is the same lineup where twice set-over-set failed to result in any aggression on the river due to some mild coordination.

*us: assuming that we are players who watch tv, read poker books and internet forums such as twoplustwo and rgp.

That's a nice win for you - feels good to river someone yes?

I've got to ask though - do you really like the limit game more than NL? How do you find such a steady game - do you play at the Bellagio, or are you an east coaster - is that Foxwoods?

I've always been more comfortable at 1-2 NL than any limit games I've tried, because of the greater possibilities for betting and defending strong hands, setting traps against loose players, etc.

Hello there, I like limit hold'em for a lot of small reasons; there is more action, the game is faster (1/2 has a time charge at Woods which makes me hate slow games) and you actually make decent money by stealing the blinds, and limit is more ingrained in my brain since that what used to only be played.

I play mostly at Foxwoods where the limit games aren't too tough. you?

and yes it felt great.

I live in Vegas and used to play a lot of no limit at the biggies here, Bellagio, Venetian, Wynn and MGM Grand. Not so much anymore, I hit a losing streak and took a break from it. If I was making more at my job I would probably play more, that situation may change in the near future. It is fun, I would like to get back to playing mroe at some point.

Those are pretty good reasons for liking limit, although I'm not clear on how you steal the blinds with only being to raise one bet - do people actually fold for that? They don't even see the flop - or do you have to make a continuation bet. And if one of the blinds leads out do you raise him and hope he's bluffing? Just curious what your approach is with that.

I was always best at the tourist dumbie 1-2 NL games that Poker Grump seems to lurk in, but eventually I just got tired of trying to trap people who were less technically skilled than I but often more lucky. Those grinds can be rough.

If you have short of money problems then it's usually a bad idea to play poker in casinos. You can play those freerolls online for no risk with some chance for reward. min buy ins for 1/2 is also a possibility if you have a little money but you have to play really really tight.

Stealing blinds in limit hold'em usually means that the game isn't very good although that is often the case in tight Las Vegas. Most people assume a late position opener is on a steal and if the blinds call and then check, you have to bet nearly 100% of the time.
